Motivating Service

Time: 9-10 am

Workshop Description: Give me a S! S! Give me a E! E! Give me a R! R! Give me a V! V! Give me an I! I! Give me a C! C! Give me a E! E! What does that spell! SERVICE! Come to this workshop to learn ways to motivate members to try new service projects and how to inspire members to plan out-of-the-box service ideas.

Presenter Bio: Julia Schuckman is an Alumni of the AHO Chapter at Stockton University and Inter-Chapter Deputy for Section P3. Currently, she is working on getting her MA in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York City. During her time as an active, Julia held a variety of E-board positions including being Vice President of Service where she helped the chapter receive the Spring Youth Service Day Grant and the Service Innovation Grant.

 

Interacting with the Community

Time: 9-10 am

Location: Jubilee 119

Workshop Description: Interacting with your community is critical to the success of your chapter and is something you should be proud of! Your chapter has a duty to work to better the campus, community, and nation that it is a part of! Come learn how to identify the problems in your community so that you can better serve and interact with it as a fraternity.

APO Spark

Time: 10-11 am

Workshop Description: APO Spark is a series of activities and talks structured to remind us of what has inspired us to become brothers all those year ago or even just a few months ago. It is never too early or too late to remind ourselves what inspired us to be involved in this organization dedicated to leadership, friendship and service.

Presenter Bio: Meaghan Tripod joined APO in Spring 2013 as part of the extension effort at Stockton University. Since then, she has held many positions between active brotherhood and alumni staff, her most current position is Section P2 Chair. Her interest in APO are in Extension, Motivation, and of course her students.

Presenter Bio: Vincent Mondaro (Alpha Delta Phi, Spring ’98) graduated Seton Hall University in 1999 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Vincent currently serves APO as Section P-2 & P-3's Awards Coordinator; Section P-4's Conference Coordinator; Alpha Gamma Sigma (NJCU) chapter’s liaison; and community advisor for the Nu Psi, Alpha Delta Phi, & Pi Upsilon chapters.

Presenter Bio: James Carolan was a re-founder at the Nu Psi Chapter at Montclair state University in 2009. James serves on region P staff as awards coordinator and staff at Large. Currently James works a a live events producer traveling around the country putting on the audio visual portion or large events and keynotes.


 

Building a Good Leadership Program

Time: 10-11 am

Location: Jubilee 111

Workshop Description: The shift from building a leadership program to maintaining it can be tough. The principle of stewardship can help you leverage the right tools to evolve your chapters leadership program alongside the ever-changing needs of your chapter.

Presenter Bio: Jose Concepcion graduated in 2015 with a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering. As an active he served as leadership chair; as an alum, he was Deputy Leadership Development Coordinator. Jose believes that through practicing leadership development, one can inspire and drive others to find their voice. Outside of APO, Jose enjoys baking, watching the New York Knicks, and playing Dota 2.

Presenter Bio: Mike Azzara pledged APO in Spring 2010. During his time as an active, he helped establish a strong leadership program. After graduating he served as Section 101/102 Leadership Coordinator (2 years), Region I Volunteerism Coordinator (1 year) and currently serves as Section P3 Chair. Mike has experience presenting various topics on the sectional, regional, and national level within APO. He is an Eagle Scout, current Assistant Scoutmaster for Scouts BSA, and works as an engineer in New York.

 

Robert’s Rules

Time: 10-11 am

Location: Jubilee 109

Description: This workshop goes through how Parliamentary Procedures (Robert's Rules) gets used throughout your chapter concentrating on bylaws creation and meetings.

Presenter Bio: Andrew Braverman grew up in Rockville Centre, New York and became a Brother at Epsilon Zeta Chapter at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1983. After graduating, Andy joined section 97 staff and has served the section in many positions including Chair, Vice Chair / Chief of Staff, Extension Chair, and chapter liaison among others. He has also served Region I in various ways, currently serving in a number of positions including Extension Chair and Bylaws Review Committee Chair. Nationally, he has served on the Alumni, Alumni Relations and Internal Volunteer Development, Volunteer Development, Leadership Development, and Education and Operations committees.  

 

Quality in Quantity Recruitment- Cracking the Safe: Maximizing the New Member Experience

Time: 10-11 am

Location: Jubilee 120

Workshop Description: The individual New Member experience can vary greatly, especially when chapters recruit their way to unexpectedly large classes. Disengaged New Members today can become disengaged Brothers tomorrow, so chapters must work hard to prepare each and every New Member for active, productive membership in Alpha Phi Omega. This workshop will explore, through key articles of the National Pledging Standards, ways Educators can deliver the teachings and benefits of the process to all New Members, regardless of class size or conflicting obligations.

Presenter Bio: Sean Dirscherl is an alumnus of the Theta Alpha chapter at Stevens Institute of Technology. He pledged Alpha Phi Omega in 2011 and graduated in 2016. As an undergraduate, he served as his chapter's Fellowship VP, Recruitment Chair, and National Voting Delegate (2014 - Chicago). As an alumnus, he serves as Section P-3 liaison to Nu Psi chapter at Montclair State University and as Treasurer of Theta Alpha's alumni association. He currently works for Weeks Marine as a Staff Engineer, lives in scenic Rahway, and is an avid NASCAR enthusiast.

Risk Management: Beyond the Basics

Time: 11 am-12 pm

Location: Jubilee 109

Workshop Description: An interactive discussion on how risk management can be a benefit rather than a burden, and improve your brotherhood.

Presenter Bio: Tim Sigler was initiated in fall of 2013 with the Alpha Delta class of Theta Alpha at Stevens Institute of Technology. After graduation they went on to serve as one of Theta Alpha’s faculty advisers from 2016 to 2018, and has served as risk management adviser for section P3 (formerly 101) for one year. They are also a first year medical student and class secretary at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and recently became a first time parent.

 

Making Membership Personal

Time: 11 am-12 pm

Location: Jubilee 120

Workshop Description: A workshop that will help you and your chapter better connect with your current and incoming brothers. Making a lasting impact is important for not only the people coming in but also for the brothers that are already there! This workshop will primarily be a round table style workshop. I am guiding this workshop towards problems your chapters are having now or have had in the past. If we want to make membership personal then we need to get personal, right? Come with questions and ideas!

Presenter Bio: Nicholas Sciancalepore, is an alumnus of Nu Theta chapter and the Section P-2 Membership coordinator. He joined APO in the Fall of 2013 and served the chapter in positions such as President and Vice President of Membership. He is currently graduating from graduate school to be a school psychologist.

 

Chapter Finances

Time: 11 am-12 pm

Location: Jubilee 141

Workshop Description: Join Jacob for a discussion of recent changes to the National Fraternities' finances and how they relate to the Region/Section level as well as you at the chapter level. We'll also cover best practices for creating and following a Chapter budget.

Presenter Bio: Jacob was initiated in Fall 2012 at the Theta Alpha Chapter (Stevens Institute of Technology). During his active years he served as his chapter's Fundraising Chair, Treasurer, and then President (he also served as his school's Student Government Association Treasurer). He's now the Section P3 Treasurer and Alpha Delta Phi Liaison.

 

Public Speaking and Presentation Tips

Time: 11 am-12 pm

Location: Jubilee 119

Workshop Description: "In a recent poll on what humans fear most, researchers found that 19% of responders said dying; and 41% said public speaking! This interactive workshop will guide attendees through the do's and do not's of public speech, oratory, and getting your point across to your intended audience."

Regional Realignment and National Organization

Time: 1:30-2:30 pm

Location: Jubilee 120

Workshop Description: At the conclusion of the 2018 national convention, APO realigned its administrative regions creating the new Region P. So….what does this actually mean to your chapter? Do the roles and responsibilities of my Section Chair or Regional Director change? Who do I email at the national office if I can’t register pledges on the Officer Portal? At this workshop we’ll go over the structure of the national organization, discuss the roles and responsibilities of your sectional and regional leadership and go over who you

should reach out to, both locally and at the national office, if you have issues.

Presenter Bio: George Kober pledged the Alpha Phi Chapter at Washington University in St. Louis in 1987 and was active in the Alpha Psi Chapter as a graduate student at Lehigh University. Currently, George is serving as an advisor to the Omicron Iota Chapter at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. For his service to the Fraternity, George has been awarded the Alpha Phi Chapter DSK, the Section 96 DSK, the Region 1 DSK and the National DSK.

 

APO Diversity

Time: 1:30-2:30 pm

Workshop Description: Alpha Phi Omega prides itself on being a diverse group made up of of members from different backgrounds, and it is important for us to work to continuously improve the fraternity to make it more welcoming and inclusive. Join this hybrid workshop with round table discussions as we learn about the importance of Diversity & Inclusion within APO, and walk through some examples of how to include these discussions and activities at the chapter level.

Presenter Bio: Trevor is an alumnus of the Theta Alpha Chapter at Stevens Institute of Technology ('17). He currently serves Section P-3 as Deputy Section Chair, the APO Theta Alpha Alumni Association as Vice President, and as a member of the National Diversity Committee. Professionally, Trevor is a chemical engineer, working for a petroleum additives company based in Linden, NJ.

Applying Technology in APO

Time: 1:30-2:30 pm

Workshop Description: In this workshop, we will discuss how chapters can use technology effectively within their chapter. Learn how several chapters in Region P use technology to boost efficiency and collaboration within their chapter.

Presenter Bio: Garrett Palowitch pledged the Nu Delta Chapter at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania in the fall of 2008. While active, he served as the Vice President of Service and the Sergeant-At-Arms. As an alumnus, Garrett serves as the Community Advisor for the Alpha Zeta Gamma Chapter at The College of New Jersey, the section liaison for the Pi Rho Chapter at Rider University, and as a Region P and Section P2 staff member.

Presenter Bio: Michael Martis is a Junior Finance major at The College of New Jersey. He joined the AZG chapter of APO in Spring 2018 and fell in love with this fraternity. At the end of the semester, he was elected as Webmaster for the Fall 2018 semester. During the fall Michael worked alongside the President of AZG to introduce Our House to our fraternity. After a successful term as Webmaster he was elected for Treasurer for the year of 2019 and is currently loving his time in APO!

Alumni Networking

Workshop Description: All of you will become alumni someday! Come and learn about some of the fantastic opportunities that await you once you've earned your diploma!

Presenter Bio: Kristen Rosenboom, an alumni of the Alpha Delta Phi Chapter at Seton Hall University, currently serves as Alumni Coordinator for Section P-3.

Presenter Bio: Laura Kammerer pledged Pi Rho in 1999 and graduated in 2001. She was on staff in what was section 99 from 2001 to 2003 and then took a long break from the fraternity until Jan 2013 when she became Alumni Coordinator for Section 102, now section P2. Outside the frat she lives in Mt Laurel, NJ and works for Farmers Insurance.

 

Bylaws Roundtable

Time: 2:30-3:30 pm

Location: Jubilee 111

Workshop Description: Come by and enjoy a short presentation and open discussion on how to make your Bylaws work effectively for your chapter. During this round table we will focus on both general and chapter-specific Bylaw questions.

Presenter Bio: Alex Paciulli graduated Stevens Institute of Technology in 2018 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and currently works in Life Science consulting. During her time as an active in the Theta Alpha Chapter she served as President, Secretary, Alumni Secretary, and Recruitment Chair. Since graduating, Alex has been a member of staff as Section 101/P3 Membership Coordinator and Bylaws Chair.

Retention Thru Fellowship

Time: 2:30-3:30 pm

Location: Jubilee 120

Workshop Description: Retaining chapter members is not an easy feat. It can be hard to keep everyone active but an excellent opportunity to retain brothers is through your chapter’s fellowship program. This workshop will help chapters define their retention needs and address these needs in their fellowship program. New fellowships ideas are welcome!

Presenter Bio: Katie Brown is an alumna from Theta Alpha at Stevens Institute of Technology. Since pledging in Fall 2013, Katie has held a variety of chapter, section, and region leadership roles as both an active and alum. She is quite fond of anything that relates to Recruitment/Membership, Conference/Event Planning, and Inter-chapter Relations but also loves the people that APO has connected her with. Professionally she is a Quality Engineer for L’Oreal USA and thanks you for inevitably supporting her paycheck.

Building a Good Membership Program

Time: 3:30-4:30 pm

Workshop Description: The Essentials of a Good Membership Program: It's no mystery that part of what makes and keeps a chapter healthy is its membership program. This workshop will discuss the tenets of what constitutes a successful program and how your chapter can create or expand upon its own.

Presenter Bio: Lillian "Lil" Mondaro (Alpha Delta Phi, Spring '98) graduated Seton Hall University in 2001 with a B.A. in English; professionally she is a Proofreader. She currently serves APO as Region P's Membership Coordinator; Lambda Delta (NJIT)'s Chapter Liaison; a community advisor for Nu Psi, Alpha Delta Phi and Pi Upsilon (Advisory Chair); and an APO LEADS: EXPLORE Director, among other roles. Lil is a five-time Chapter Pledge Class Namesake (Pi Upsilon, Nu Psi [co w/ Vin Mondaro], Pi Rho, Alpha Eta Omicron, & Alpha Zeta Gamma), a Silver Torchbearer, and part of the Society of Life Members. She received Distinguished Service Keys from Pi Upsilon, Alpha Delta Phi, and Section 101.

 

Planning a Conference

Time: 2:30-3:30 pm

Location: Jubilee 109

Workshop Description: This workshop includes everything you should know before throwing your chapter in for a sectionals bid. It covers important information regarding to to expect before you go in for a bid, planning once you get the bid, and what to expect day of. It highlights important aspects that should be covered and provides an approximate timeline of when things should be done during the planning process.

Presenter Bio: Collette D'Errico currently serves as the Region R chair and is an alumni of the Omicron Iota chapter.

 

Launch

Time: 9 am-12 pm

Location: Jubilee 139

Description: As the prerequisite for all other APO LEADS courses Launch increases participants’ knowledge of leadership skills and what it means to be a Servant Leader while also providing strategies to apply within their chapters.

Presenter Bio: Jen Werfelman pledged Chi Pi Chapter at SUNY Fredonia in the spring of 2010. She served as Alumni Relations Chair, Historian, and served as Voting Delegate at the 2010 Atlanta National Convention. As an alumni, she has held several positions at the section and regional levels, including Membership Coordinator and then Section Chair for Section 97.  She currently serves Alpha Phi Omega as the Region P Leadership Development Chair and is an APO LEADS Director of Launch and Achieve as well as Director in Training for Explore.

Presenter Bio: John Cook was initiated by the Lambda Delta Chapter at the New Jersey Institute of Technology as an honorary member in Spring 2011. He currently serves on the National Alumni Relations Committee and is the Region P Deputy IVD. John is also involved with the APO Alumni Association of New Jersey, where he was elected president in 2015 and served for two years. John was awarded the APOAANJ Distinguished Service Key in 2017. He is also an experienced LEADS presenter for Launch, Explore, and Serve.

 

Discover

Time: 1:30-4:30 pm

Location: Jubilee 139

Workshop Description: This course is a comprehensive training on the strategies of assertive communication and self-motivation. Participants will gain a better understanding of their own and other’s social interaction styles.

Presenter Bio: DJ Chapman is a 2012 graduate of Theta Alpha, and is a LEADS Presenter for Discover and Achieve. He currently works as a Systems Engineer at Picatinny Arsenal. DJ also volunteers at his church, St. Vincent Martyr in Madison, NJ. In his spare time he co-hosts a podcast, Mostly Nitpicking, where he picks a part a piece of pop culture.
